The United States is facing renewed concerns about a potential resurgence in inflation

2025-07-16
Summary:New signs of rising inflation in the U.S. cast doubt on a July Federal Reserve rate cut. Simultaneously, Nvidia's stock surged, boosting the U.S. market, following H20 export approval for China and the debut of its new RTXPro graphics card.

US Inflation Shows Resilience Again, Federal Reserve's Policy Faces Test

Data from the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicates a surprising uptick in inflation for June after an overall decline earlier this year, sparking market concerns. The CPI increased by 0.3% month-on-month and 2.7% year-on-year, marking the highest rate since February. Although the core CPI (excluding volatile food and energy prices) rose by 0.2% month-on-month, slightly below market expectations, it still matched the year-on-year forecast with an increase of 2.9%.

Specifically, while car prices fell month-on-month, prices for goods like clothing and home goods affected by tariffs showed an upward trend. Housing prices remained the main factor driving the overall CPI increase, with only a 0.2% rise for the month but a substantial 3.8% increase year-on-year. Also, food prices rose by 0.3%, and energy prices rebounded from a decline in May, increasing by 0.9%. Additionally, medical and transportation service prices rose slightly, jointly contributing to the rise in inflation levels.

Tariff Effects Becoming Apparent, Fed Faces Dilemma

Analysts suggest that June’s inflation data might cause Federal Reserve officials to adopt a more cautious stance on interest rate cuts. Previously, the market generally expected the Fed to start cutting rates in the second half of this year, but the latest inflation data undoubtedly casts a shadow on that expectation. Especially among policymakers who believe tariffs will exert more significant price pressure later this year, June's data may reinforce their stance.

Former President Trump has consistently urged the Fed to cut rates and argued that tariffs would not exacerbate inflation. However, the Fed has previously maintained that the U.S. economy is strong enough, refusing to compromise on monetary policy. This resurgence of inflation poses a dilemma for the Fed, balancing economic stability with political pressure.

Uncertainty Over Fed Chair Nominee Emerges Again

Discussions about the tenure of Fed Chair Jerome Powell have resurfaced. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant recently revealed that a "formal process" to select Powell's potential successor has begun. This undoubtedly heightens market uncertainty regarding the future direction of the Fed’s monetary policy. If Powell steps down, the monetary policy stance of a new Fed Chair would have profound implications for the U.S. economy and global financial markets.

Nvidia's Stock Soars as AI Chip Opportunities Grow

Amid confusion over inflation and Federal Reserve policy prospects, Nvidia stands out, with its stock price surging and market value surpassing $4.1 trillion. This rise is primarily due to its strong performance in the artificial intelligence sector and the lifting of restrictions on exports to China.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang confirmed that the U.S. government has approved the export application for the H20 chip, and Nvidia will commence shipping to China. The H20 is a specially designed AI accelerator card for the Chinese market, and the resumption of its exports will further solidify Nvidia’s leadership in China. Previously, due to export restrictions, shipments of Nvidia's H20 and other products were temporarily halted.

Additionally, Huang announced the upcoming release of a new graphics card named RTXPro, designed for computer graphics, digital twins, and artificial intelligence, aiming to meet professionals' high-performance computing needs. These positive announcements have not only boosted Nvidia’s stock price but also invigorated the broader technology stock market, highlighting the enormous potential and growth prospects of the artificial intelligence industry.

Inflation
