Trump Threatens Contract Cuts, Musk Responds Swiftly

On June 6th local time, tensions between Musk and US President Trump erupted publicly on social platforms. Once allies, the two are now completely at odds, engaging in a fiery exchange on X (formerly Twitter) and Truth Social platforms. Trump first posted on his social media, calling Musk "crazy," and threatened to cut contracts for SpaceX and other companies secured from the government.

"The easiest way to save money in our budget is to cancel Elon's government contracts; this could save tens of billions, even hundreds of billions of dollars." Trump was straightforward and expressed his "surprise" that Biden hasn't taken similar action.

Musk's Counter: Retiring the Dragon Spacecraft

In the face of Trump's threats, Musk did not back down and responded on X, "Go ahead, make my day." He then escalated by announcing that SpaceX will "immediately begin retiring the Dragon spacecraft."

The news of retiring the Dragon, currently SpaceX's main manned spacecraft, sent shockwaves through the US space community. NASA press secretary Bethany Stevens swiftly responded, "We will continue to pursue the President's space goals and work with industry partners to ensure the fulfillment of the national space program."

The Importance of the Dragon Spacecraft

Since 2008, SpaceX has secured over $20 billion in federal contracts, making it one of the largest space contractors in the US. The company's Dragon spacecraft has in recent years become a mainstay for American manned space missions.

Recently, due to technical issues with Boeing's Starliner project, two American astronauts were stranded on the International Space Station. Ultimately, NASA decided to rely on SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft to bring the astronauts back to Earth, underscoring its importance.

Additionally, on April 22nd, the Dragon spacecraft completed a mission transporting 6,700 pounds of supplies and research equipment to the International Space Station. According to SpaceX's website, the Dragon is currently the only spacecraft capable of returning significant cargo to Earth and is the first privately developed spacecraft to carry out a successful manned space mission.

Boeing Struggles to Lead

Although Boeing is also involved in NASA's commercial crew program, its progress is far behind SpaceX. Boeing only successfully launched its first manned mission in June last year and repeatedly encountered issues, relying on SpaceX to sort things out.

SpaceX, on the other hand, has been consistently providing NASA with stable manned services since 2020, with its Dragon spacecraft being at the heart of America's new generation of manned space programs.

Deteriorating Business Relations May Impact National Space Strategy

This war of words is not just a personal dispute; it may influence the future development of the US space sector. As NASA's most dependable partner, any strategic adjustments by SpaceX could severely affect US manned spaceflight.

The rift between Musk and Trump not only lies in financial and policy disagreements but also involves a battle for technological and industry dominance. Observers have noted that if their relationship worsens, the cooperation between the government and SpaceX could face more uncertainties.
