Oregon-based robotics firm Agility Robotics has disclosed, for the first time, the detailed economic model behind its humanoid robot, Digit. The company’s latest securities filing states that purchasing the newest Digit v5 model involves an upfront robot cost of approximately $200,000, alongside a one-time deployment fee of about $20,000. Annual expenses for software licensing and maintenance are estimated at $36,000 per unit.
Assuming a 5-year operational lifespan—an industry standard—each Digit robot’s total ownership cost sums up to around $400,000. While these figures are preliminary estimates subject to client negotiations, Agility projects that customers can recover their investment in roughly 1.1 years through productivity gains.
Operational Efficiency and Working Hours Highlight Key Value Drivers
According to the filing, Digit robots are designed to work up to 20 hours a day, enabling extended use on factory floors. Capable of handling loads up to 50 pounds (about 23 kilograms), Digit targets foundational material handling tasks such as warehouse sorting and basic logistics.
Jonathan Hurst, Agility’s co-founder, has confirmed that Digit is currently deployed at nine customer sites, including leading companies like Schaeffler in Germany, GXO Logistics, Toyota’s Canadian manufacturing facilities, and Amazon.
Market Positioning and Price Comparisons
Unlike many competitors that keep cost details confidential, Agility Robotics’ transparency offers valuable insight into the economics of humanoid robots for industrial settings. For context, Chinese company Unitree Robotics markets its G1 humanoid robot starting at $13,500, but its use mainly focuses on research and academic purposes with limited industrial deployment.
