USA New Year Security Alert: Terror Attacks and Explosions Occur Consecutively
On the first day of the new year, the USA experienced multiple incidents that disrupted the holiday's peaceful atmosphere.
In the early hours of January 1 local time, a pickup truck drove onto the streets of downtown New Orleans, resulting in at least 15 deaths and dozens of injuries, and the number of casualties may rise further. The FBI has classified the incident as a terrorist attack. Preliminary investigations reveal the vehicle bore the flag of the extremist group “Islamic State,” and several improvised bombs were found inside the vehicle and on surrounding streets. The perpetrator, identified as 42-year-old retired military veteran Jabbar, was shot dead in a firefight with law enforcement.
The FBI disclosed that Jabbar served in the US military for 10 years and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. Investigators suggest he might have had accomplices, and the investigation and manhunt are actively ongoing.
On the same morning, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. The explosion killed the driver instantly and injured at least seven others. The iconic hotel sign and burning vehicle quickly became a media focal point. Police have yet to confirm the cause of the explosion and the investigation is still underway.
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated at a press conference, "The incident in New Orleans is shocking, and now there's an explosion on the iconic streets of Las Vegas. We are taking all necessary measures to ensure community safety."
Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed concern about the incident and pledged full cooperation with the investigation. He emphasized, "We have never seen anything like this; the entire team is on high alert."
Worryingly, there seems to be a connection between the two incidents. According to law enforcement, the vehicle used in the New Orleans attack and the Cybertruck in the Las Vegas explosion were both rented through the car rental platform Turo. This "coincidence" has led to widespread speculation that the Turo platform may have been misused, becoming a key focus in the investigation.
Law enforcement agencies across the US have now heightened their alert levels to prevent potential similar incidents. These attacks have shocked and saddened communities, prompting increased public concern over safety issues.
