Situation in Los Angeles Remains Tense, Marines Deploy in Large Numbers

June 11 - The situation in Los Angeles, California, remains volatile. On the 10th, a U.S. official confirmed that approximately 700 Marines have arrived in the Los Angeles area and are on standby for deployment to specific locations. Northern Command stated that this force will integrate seamlessly with the previously deployed National Guard to protect federal facilities and personnel safety.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, this deployment is expected to cost around $134 million, marking one of the largest domestic military mobilizations. This move has sparked a strong response within U.S. society, with many critics labeling it as an "uncommon and excessive" domestic military intervention.

State Government Pushes Back, Requests Court Intervention

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Bonta formally filed a motion for a temporary restraining order to the court on the 10th, seeking to immediately stop the federal government from deploying further military forces to patrol California communities. They argued that this action constitutes an "imminent threat" to state government authority and could exacerbate the already tense social situation.

However, a U.S. judge did not immediately approve the request, opting for a hearing to be held on June 12. Lawyers for the Trump administration quickly countered, calling the legal request "baseless" and accusing it of potentially "endangering national security" and "interfering with federal operations."

Public Reaction Strong: Majority Oppose Troop Deployment

According to new survey data from YouGov cited by the Axios news website, 47% of Americans oppose the deployment of the Marines to Los Angeles, with 45% also against the deployment of the National Guard. Meanwhile, only 34% of respondents support the military presence, reflecting a general caution or opposition among the public to federal military intervention in local affairs.

Another survey indicated that while 45% of respondents do not support protests against federal agencies in Los Angeles, 36% expressed support. This reveals a deep division in U.S. society over how to handle the current tense situation.

Protests and Military Standoff Intertwined, White House Stands Firm

President Trump reiterated on June 10 that the National Guard will remain stationed in Los Angeles "until there is no danger." Previously, without the request of California officials, he signed a presidential memorandum on the 7th to deploy 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles. Subsequently, the Department of Defense announced it would send an additional 2,000 personnel based on directives, bringing the total to 4,000.

Meanwhile, federal raids targeting illegal immigrants have been ongoing in Los Angeles for several days, resulting in multiple confrontations and protests. A 47-year-old protester expressed anger to AFP: "They are supposed to protect us, but they are being sent to confront us."

Military and Police Mobilization Highlights Power Struggle

This event not only reflects the policy divides in the U.S. on immigration and security issues but also exposes the power boundary conflicts between the federal and state governments in crisis response. Experts indicate that this rare involvement of active military forces in local law enforcement poses a serious challenge to the U.S. constitutional structure.

As the hearing approaches, the power struggle between the federal and state governments will continue. Los Angeles will remain the focal point of national political conflict and societal division.
