Escalation in Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Central Kyiv Hit by Drone Attack, Ukraine Claims Strike on Russian Oil Systems
As 2025 begins, the Russia-Ukraine conflict intensifies with frequent attacks by both sides, resulting in significant damage and casualties.
Rare Airstrike on Central Kyiv by Russian Forces
According to Ukrainian officials, Russian forces launched a drone attack on the morning of January 1, 2025, targeting the Pecherskyi District in central Kyiv, home to the presidential palace and government offices. This rare airstrike caused at least one death, seven injuries, and several buildings to be damaged and set on fire.
The Ukrainian air force reported that multiple Russian drones fired missiles at Kyiv, some of which were intercepted, but falling debris caused further damage. Xinhua News Agency reported that Kyiv Mayor Klitschko stated that in addition to the Pecherskyi District, the Sviatoshynskyi District was also attacked, with non-residential buildings hit and set ablaze, and rescue operations are underway.
AFP quoted local officials saying that the attack occurred just hours after the New Year rang in, as Ukrainian President Zelenskyy delivered his New Year's address vowing to "end the war within the next 12 months."
Ukrainian Counterattack on Russian Oil Depot and Systems
Meanwhile, Ukraine's counterattacks on Russia are intensifying. Ukrainian forces struck an oil depot in Russia's Smolensk region, resulting in a massive explosion and fire. Ukraine stated that the depot primarily supported Russian military supplies.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian National News Agency reported that cyber experts from Ukraine's defense ministry intelligence directorate attacked the systems of Russia's Lukoil, preventing customers from using mobile apps to pay at gas stations. Ukraine claimed that this cyberattack caused significant economic losses to Lukoil, but Russia has yet to respond.
Escalation of Russia-Ukraine Conflict at New Year
Hours before the New Year, the Russian defense ministry reported that Russian forces used precision weapons and drones on the morning of December 31 to strike a Ukrainian military airfield and an arms factory, destroying all designated targets.
Simultaneously, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that in 2024, Ukrainian forces shot down over 1,300 Russian missiles, attacked 11,200 drones, and destroyed 40 Russian aircraft, demonstrating Ukraine's persistent air defense resistance.
Zelenskyy: Committed to Ending the War
In the face of escalating conflict, Zelenskyy pledged in his New Year's address to do everything possible to end the war within the next 12 months. He highlighted Ukraine's significant defensive achievements over the past year and urged the international community to increase its support for Ukraine, especially in energy and arms sectors.
Increased Uncertainties in Future Developments
Analysts note that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered a new phase in 2025, with intensified military and cyberattacks from both sides likely leading to greater destruction and casualties. The international community must closely monitor the situation and endeavor to facilitate peace efforts.
