Anthropic plans to create an independent limited liability company, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, and use company shares to support initiatives it considers in the public interest. The fund could make grants to nonprofits or distribute money directly to specific groups. Its initial share transfer still requires shareholder approval.
Proposed initial stake valued at about $48 billion
In a blog post, Anthropic said it plans to transfer shares to the new fund and increase its holdings over time as the company grows. The initial proposal would give the fund shares equal to 5% of Anthropic’s total equity. Based on the company’s most recent valuation, announced in May, that stake would be worth about $48 billion.
That figure reflects the shares’ value at Anthropic’s valuation; it does not mean the fund would receive $48 billion in cash. The company has not detailed how the fund would manage or use its shares, or which projects it would support. Anthropic said an independent fund would give it greater flexibility and scale in pursuing its mission. The initial transfer remains subject to a shareholder vote.
OpenAI established a similar foundation in 2025
Anthropic’s proposal resembles a move by fellow frontier AI company OpenAI, which established a nonprofit foundation in 2025 and earmarked company equity worth billions of dollars for public-interest projects. Both initiatives link corporate equity with funding for public-benefit work, but their governance structures, allocation methods and areas of focus differ.
For Anthropic, the proposed fund’s scale is tied to the company’s valuation. If approved, it would receive an initial stake equivalent to 5% of the company, with any later increase linked to Anthropic’s growth plans. Key details remain unresolved, including the shareholder vote, the fund’s operating arrangements and how it will select future recipients.
