Increasing Odds of September Fed Rate Hike
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the recent Jackson Hole Economic Symposium intensified market expectations for a rate increase in September. Despite July’s CPI and PCE inflation metrics showing signs of easing, Warsh maintained a hawkish stance, emphasizing the persistence of core inflation pressures. According to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool, the probability of a 25 basis point rate hike in September has climbed from 41.4% last week to nearly 60%.
The upcoming August US nonfarm payroll report has become a focal point, with forecasts estimating a gain of roughly 50,000 jobs. The June figures surprised to the downside with a decline of 23,000 new jobs, and revisions suggest the labor market has been weaker than initially thought over recent years. Traders are closely watching these data for clues on the Federal Reserve’s policy direction.
Geopolitical Tensions Lift Oil Prices
Renewed US military airstrikes against Iran pushed Brent crude prices back above $90 per barrel, while WTI crude climbed above $85. The Iranian Kharg Island oil terminal was reportedly targeted again, with former President Donald Trump sharing AI-generated footage of the attack on social media. European equities showed signs of strain, with Germany’s DAX index falling 0.7% amid these developments.
Separately, the US entered a landmark energy agreement with Venezuela, aimed at managing control over approximately 65 billion barrels of oil reserves valued at more than $5.4 trillion, spanning a 25-year contract. Trump hailed the deal as the "largest oil agreement in history," prompting market participants to monitor potential structural shifts in the global oil landscape.
Bitcoin Struggles Under Technical Pressure
As September approaches, Bitcoin faces considerable technical resistance despite a recent episode of one of the largest liquidations of long positions in history. Bitcoin remains capped below the $80,000 mark, with brief dips below the 50-week exponential moving average (around $77,269) quickly reversed to maintain critical support.
Rafael Schultze-Kraft, co-founder of crypto analytics platform Glassnode, emphasized that the 50-week simple moving average near $80,307 remains a significant weekly resistance point. Historically, failure to break above this threshold has restricted further price advances.
Monthly Close Faces Strong Resistance
Bitcoin has gained nearly 25% for August, yet technical analysis reveals persistent inability to break through a major descending macro trendline. Resistance is concentrated between $81,000 and $86,000, identified by Glassnode research as a critical battleground where buying and selling pressures converge.
Trader and analyst Rekt Capital noted that surpassing this zone could significantly alter Bitcoin’s four-year price cycle dynamics, potentially shortening the current bear market. Nonetheless, heavy sell orders populate this range, necessitating sustained buying momentum for a breakthrough.
Long-Term Holders Influence Price Stability
Glassnode data shows that long-term Bitcoin holders—those who have not sold in over six months—hold approximately 1.05 million BTC at average costs between $83,000 and $86,000. On-chain analytics provider CryptoQuant added that during August, large holders with wallets containing more than 100 BTC accumulated over 60,000 coins, while smaller holders tended to take profits or exit positions.
The investment stance of these large holders remains pivotal. Should they begin selling below $80,000, the current accumulation trend could reverse, impacting Bitcoin’s price trajectory.
Market focus remains trained on the imminent US employment report, the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions, and the geopolitical events influencing oil prices and Bitcoin’s price action. Investors and analysts continue to monitor these factors closely to gauge forthcoming market developments.
