Federal disclosure filings show that Elon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX, gave the Senate Leadership Fund $158 million in two September donations. The super PAC has close ties to Senate Republicans and later directed large sums to organizations supporting Republican Senate candidates in Texas, making Musk one of the biggest political donors in the current U.S. midterm election cycle.
Donations Routed Into the Texas Senate Race
Musk made a $75 million donation in September, and the Senate Leadership Fund transferred the same amount to a Texas political action committee the following day. Musk later contributed another $83 million; the Texas organization received an $83 million donation the next day.
The transfers are linked to the Texas Senate contest, where state Attorney General Ken Paxton is competing with state Representative James Talarico for the Republican nomination. Talarico's campaign has raised about $129 million. Large political contributions can shape the campaign resources available to candidates and affiliated groups, although the amounts listed in the disclosures do not mean that the candidates' campaign committees received the same sums directly.
Musk's Political Giving Has Reached About $276 Million
Based on the disclosures, Musk has contributed about $276 million to political causes since July. In addition to the Senate Leadership Fund, some of the money has moved through other political organizations involved in Texas elections. The transfers between the Senate Leadership Fund and groups supporting Republican Senate candidates illustrate how donations can pass through a super PAC into a wider election-support network.
The Republican field is campaigning against a backdrop of economic and international pressures, including the war in Iran, rising inflation and elevated gasoline prices. Polling has also shown broad dissatisfaction among U.S. voters with the president's leadership and handling of the economy. Those conditions may affect views of the governing party, but the filings do not state Musk's specific reasons for making the donations.
Texas Is Also a Major Base for Musk's Companies
Musk's companies have committed substantial investment to Texas. SpaceX is building a semiconductor facility called Terafab outside Houston. In 2024, Musk announced that SpaceX would move its headquarters from California to Texas, linking the decision to California Governor Gavin Newsom's approach to gender-identity policies.
Musk said in 2025 that he may have already "done enough" in political spending, while also saying he would act again if he saw a reason to make future political donations. Paxton and Musk's representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the latest contributions. The available filings detail the amounts and some of the transfers, but do not provide further explanation from either side about the donation arrangements.
