Coinbase (COIN) shares have weakened in recent weeks, slipping below their 50-day moving average on October 14. With the stock under technical pressure, traders are discussing a bear call spread expiring November 20. The trade does not require a sharp decline; its premise is that Coinbase may struggle to reclaim $210 over the coming weeks.
$210 level in focus after break below 50-day average
Coinbase’s recent downtrend has put its near-term share price in focus for options traders. The $210 strike is both the lower strike in the proposed spread and close to a significant high the stock reached in late September. If shares finish below $210 at expiration on November 20, both options could expire with no intrinsic value, allowing the spread seller to keep the premium received.
A bear call spread is typically set up by selling an out-of-the-money call at a lower strike and buying another call at a higher strike. The long call caps the potential loss at a known amount. Unlike some options positions that can carry unlimited losses, the spread’s maximum loss can be calculated when the trade is opened.
November 20 spread quoted at about $1.20
For a Coinbase call spread expiring November 20, using $210 and $220 strikes, the spread was quoted at about $1.20 per share. Since one options contract represents 100 shares, the seller would collect roughly $120 in premium. That is the trade’s maximum potential gain.
If Coinbase closes below $210 on November 20, the spread could deliver the full $120 premium, equivalent to a potential return of about 32% based on the trade’s stated parameters. If the stock closes above $220, however, the maximum potential loss would be about $380. The payoff is therefore asymmetric: a move above the higher strike could leave the seller with a loss substantially larger than the premium collected.
Share price and spread value define the risk
The position could be profitable if Coinbase falls, trades sideways, or rises modestly while remaining below $210. The main adverse scenario is a move through the range set by the strikes. The trade framework also identifies a rise in Coinbase shares above $190, or an increase in the spread’s value from $1.20 to $2.40, as reference points for reassessing the position.
Options quotes, implied volatility and market moves before expiration can all affect the spread’s value. A position could show an unrealized loss even if the stock has not reached $220, as options prices change. For Coinbase, volatility in crypto markets, the stock’s technical trend and the effect of time decay before expiration will all influence how the spread performs. The structure has defined maximum gains and losses; it does not establish that Coinbase shares will continue to fall.
