A powerful storm sweeping across the U.S. Northeast this weekend has brought coastal flooding, power outages and travel disruption. New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency, while the National Weather Service warned of dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds and heavy rain from Virginia to Maine. The storm was expected to peak on Saturday.
The weather has disrupted road and air travel as well as major events. Floodwater has reached streets and homes in parts of coastal New Jersey, flights have been delayed or canceled, and several concerts and sporting events have been postponed or called off for safety reasons.
New Jersey communities face coastal flooding
Flooding was reported on Saturday in coastal communities including Surf City and Manasquan, New Jersey. In Beach Haven West, residents used kayaks to travel along inundated roads. Forecasters urged people in low-lying areas near the coast to prepare for significant flooding, which could affect roads, homes and businesses.
A full moon on Saturday was expected to contribute to higher tides and worsen coastal flooding. New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill urged residents to take the storm seriously, stay alert and follow local guidance. Flooding had already been reported in some communities, though conditions varied by location.
Nearly 150,000 customers lose power as flights are disrupted
Power outages were reported across several areas. Poweroutage.us, which tracks outages, showed nearly 150,000 homes and businesses without electricity. New York City officials warned that weekend wind gusts could reach 55 miles per hour, or about 86 kilometers per hour, potentially bringing down trees and causing further outages.
The Federal Aviation Administration advised travelers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information. FlightAware data showed more than 1,100 delays and about 400 cancellations. Flight information boards at Boston Logan International Airport also showed multiple cancellations, underscoring the storm's impact on air travel across the region.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents in a video address to avoid nonessential travel and warned against driving or walking through floodwater. Safety on low-lying roads and in coastal areas remained an immediate concern.
Boston concert and several sporting events canceled or rescheduled
Events in the Boston area were also affected. Ed Sheeran's concert at Gillette Stadium was canceled for safety reasons. The Boston Red Sox adjusted their weekend series against the Chicago Cubs, moving Sunday's game to next Friday.
A professional soccer match between the New York Red Bulls and St. Louis City SC was also canceled. The Global Citizen Festival, scheduled for Central Park in New York with Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and John Legend as headliners, was called off. With the storm expected to peak on Saturday, flight, road and event plans remained subject to weather conditions and local guidance.
