GSR Revises Core3 Model Asset Distribution
Market maker GSR has updated its weekly Core3 trading model, reducing Bitcoin (BTC) exposure to 16.9%, marking its lowest allocation within the model’s tracked trio of assets. Meanwhile, Solana (SOL) has seen its weighting rise to 43.6%, overtaking Ethereum (ETH) to become the largest holding. Core3 serves as a signal-based portfolio that reflects GSR’s short-term views on BTC, ETH, and SOL without involving client capital.
Solana’s Recent Price Gains Drive Allocation Shift
Prior to this update, Ethereum held the dominant share in the model at 39.5%, but it was displaced by Solana. Over the past week, Solana’s price increased by 2.98%, while Bitcoin and Ethereum declined by 1.02% and 0.20% respectively. This change highlights Core3’s emphasis on assets exhibiting stronger recent momentum, despite Solana’s overall weaker performance this year, which includes a 36.69% decline since January and a 60.8% drop over the last 12 months.
Divergence Between Volatility and Weighting
Bitcoin currently trades around $63,513 with a 30-day volatility of 26.82%, the lowest among the three assets. Typically, such lower volatility supports a higher portfolio weighting due to better risk-adjusted returns. However, GSR’s model favors Solana with its higher 60-day volatility of 48.84%, nearly double Bitcoin’s, reflecting a preference for short-term return potential. Solana’s elevated volatility also drives the Core3 model’s recent return fluctuations.
Core3 Underperforms a Balanced Crypto Basket
Despite the increased stake in Solana, the Core3 strategy’s performance over the past year trails behind an equal-weight portfolio of BTC, ETH, and SOL. Core3’s one-year return fell 70.28%, compared with a 63.44% decline for the balanced basket. Year-to-date, Core3 is down 35.58%, lagging behind the 32.22% drop of the equal-weight portfolio. This suggests that GSR’s tactical allocation based on short-term trends has added volatility and risk without delivering superior overall gains. The model’s future performance relative to a simple equal-weight strategy will hinge largely on whether Solana’s short-term momentum persists.
GSR’s reallocation within its Core3 model underscores an active trading approach focused on recent price strength, significantly increasing exposure to the more volatile Solana while trimming Bitcoin. This adjustment indicates evolving market sentiment and a willingness to embrace higher volatility assets in search of returns, although Solana’s sizable historical declines and elevated price swings remain points of caution for investors.
