Details on Cryptocurrency Holdings and Capital Structure
As of now, MicroStrategy holds approximately 845,050 bitcoins, starting with an initial purchase of 21,454 bitcoins in August 2020 at a cost of roughly $250 million. The current market value of this bitcoin holding is about $65.2 billion. After a 10-week pause, the company resumed purchases on August 31, acquiring an additional 4,603 bitcoins for approximately $370 million.
In addition to bitcoin, MicroStrategy holds around $6.7 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Combined, these assets bring the company’s total capital reserves to approximately $72.3 billion. CEO Phong Le noted on social media that appreciation in both bitcoin and cash assets has contributed to a net leverage ratio of zero. Furthermore, MicroStrategy's stock (MSTR) has outperformed bitcoin recently, with preferred stock yields exceeding 10%.
Net Leverage and Financial Position
MicroStrategy’s dollar-denominated debt approximately matches its cash assets, each around $6.7 billion, reflecting a balanced, zero net leverage position. The company’s strategy of building a substantial cash asset pool has helped strengthen its financial structure.
Market Reaction and Outlook
On September 2, MicroStrategy shares closed at $122.30, down 2.1% from the previous day, influenced primarily by slight weakness in bitcoin prices. Despite market volatility impacting its share price, MicroStrategy’s capital allocation strategy—particularly its significant crypto asset deployment—distinguishes it from traditional financial companies. Investors and market participants remain attentive to the performance of its diversified asset portfolio and potential future expansion moves.
