Riot’s AI Data Center Lease Sparks Rally in Mining Stocks
Riot Platforms recently announced a significant long-term lease agreement with AI firm Anthropic, covering 191 megawatts over 20 years and valued at approximately $16.1 billion including renewals. This landmark deal has invigorated investor interest in Riot and its mining peers, with shares of Riot (RIOT), TeraWulf, Cipher Mining, and Hut 8 all seeing notable gains on the same day.
Mining Stocks Climb Despite Bitcoin’s Modest Dip
On Monday, Riot’s stock rose 4.33%, Cipher Mining gained 5.39%, TeraWulf advanced 3.40%, and Hut 8 increased 3.39%. Conversely, bitcoin’s price declined slightly by 0.49%, maintaining a steady range between $62,000 and $65,000. The divergence highlights that mining stocks are currently driven more by infrastructure and power lease prospects than bitcoin price momentum.
Asset Sales Reflect Strategic Shift and Affect Bitcoin Supplies
To finance its pivot towards AI infrastructure, Riot has been selling bitcoin it mines as well as part of its reserves. By Q2 2026, Riot’s bitcoin holdings decreased by 4,300 coins, from 15,680 to 11,380. The proceeds support construction and operational costs at its data centers in Rockdale, Texas.
This marks a strategic transition from viewing mined bitcoin as a held asset to leveraging it for capital to build AI-focused facilities. CEO Jason Les noted the company has secured 241 megawatts in contracts totaling around $9.8 billion with clients concentrated in AI industries.
Analysts Value Mining Stocks Based on Infrastructure Contracts
The uplift in mining shares stems mainly from anticipated revenues tied to electricity and site leasing agreements rather than bitcoin mining output. H.C. Wainwright and Needham both raised Riot’s target price — from $25 to $40 and $30 respectively — emphasizing the value of its long-term contracts over bitcoin production.
Mining Operations Continue but With a Shift in Focus
Riot’s mining segment remains profitable, reporting $113.7 million in revenue in Q2. However, reducing bitcoin reserves to fund AI infrastructure signals a structural change within the company’s business model. This could have ongoing implications for bitcoin supply dynamics and price trends, warranting attention from investors and market participants.
In summary, while Riot’s substantial AI data center agreement has driven strength in mining stocks, the associated asset restructuring and bitcoin sales suggest a broader industry pivot towards high-value AI infrastructure services. This shift places nuanced pressure on bitcoin’s price in the near term as the sector balances legacy mining with emerging revenue streams.
