Britain's royal family continues to grow in size, but only 11 members currently carry out official duties on behalf of the monarchy. Working royals take part in charity engagements, state ceremonies, diplomatic receptions and other formal events. Prince George and Princess Beatrice, among other family members, remain outside that official roster.
Several of the 11 working royals are over 75. At 77, King Charles III is among the younger members of the group. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to live in the UK, but their status has not changed. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has already withdrawn from public royal life and given up his associated titles.
King Charles and Queen Camilla
At 77, Charles III is the eldest son of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II. He was previously married to Diana, Princess of Wales, with whom he had Prince William and Prince Harry. The couple separated in 1992. After Diana died in Paris in 1997, Charles married Camilla in a civil ceremony in 2005.
Charles became king after Elizabeth II died in 2022, making him the oldest person to accede to the British throne. He reduced his public schedule temporarily while receiving cancer treatment in early 2024, although he continued to handle state business and official paperwork. He gradually resumed regular engagements in April of that year and has continued carrying out royal duties since then.
Camilla, 79, was born into the British aristocracy. After marrying Charles, she became a member of the royal family. Although she held the title of Princess of Wales after the marriage, she chose to use the title Duchess of Cornwall to avoid a direct association with Diana's title. Camilla has two children from her previous marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles, Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes. She and Charles have no children together.
Elizabeth II had said she wanted Camilla to become queen when Charles became king. Camilla continues to attend public engagements and supports Charles in carrying out the monarchy's official work.
The Prince and Princess of Wales take on heir's duties
Prince William is Charles III's elder son and Diana's elder son, and is first in line to the throne. William met Catherine while they were studying at the University of St Andrews. They became engaged in October 2010 and married in April 2011. They were initially given the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, becoming the Prince and Princess of Wales after Charles became king in 2022.
The couple have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. William and Catherine have long played a central role in overseas tours, charity engagements and receptions linked to state visits.
Catherine reduced her public duties while receiving cancer treatment during the first half of 2024. She later attended the Trooping the Colour ceremony and Wimbledon, and said in September that she had completed chemotherapy. She gradually returned to public engagements in the autumn and said in January 2025 that her condition was in remission.
Princess Anne remains one of the busiest royals
Princess Anne, 76, is the second child of Prince Philip and Elizabeth II. She began attending public engagements at the age of 18 and was given the title Princess Royal in 1987.
Anne married Captain Mark Phillips in 1973. They divorced in 1992 and have two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall. Anne married Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence later that year. She competed in equestrian events and represented Britain at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
In 2025, Anne carried out more royal engagements than any other member of the family apart from the king. In September 2026, she and William attended the funeral of King Harald V of Norway, continuing to represent the monarchy overseas.
The Edinburghs and the Gloucesters
Prince Edward, 62, is the youngest child of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. He married Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones in 1999, when they received the titles Earl and Countess of Wessex. Charles made them the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in March 2023.
Edward previously worked in television production and writing and founded Ardent Productions in 1993. Sophie worked in public relations before starting her own company. Edward also took over responsibility for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award from his father, with a focus on youth programmes. The couple have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex.
Richard, 82, is the Duke of Gloucester and a cousin of Elizabeth II. After his elder brother died in a flying accident in 1972, Richard became heir to his father's title and formally became Duke of Gloucester in 1974. He married Birgitte van Deurs in 1972, and they have three children.
Richard and Birgitte have continued to attend public royal engagements. In August 2026, they attended events connected with Britain's first National Day for Terrorism Victims and Survivors. They also regularly appear at Royal Ascot and Wimbledon.
The Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra
Edward, the 90-year-old Duke of Kent, is the son of Prince George and Princess Marina and a cousin of both Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. He inherited the dukedom after his father died in a wartime flying accident in 1942. Edward studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, qualified as a French interpreter and left the British Army in 1976 before becoming a working royal.
He married Katharine Worsley in 1961, and they have three children. Katharine died in September 2025 at the age of 92. Edward has chaired the Commonwealth War Graves Commission since 1970. In May 2026, he accompanied the king to a service for the Order of St Michael and St George at St Paul's Cathedral and more recently appeared at Wimbledon.
Princess Alexandra, 89, is Edward's sister. She was among the first British princesses to attend an ordinary school and also trained as a nurse. Alexandra married Angus Ogilvy in 1963, and they had two children, James and Marina. After her husband died in 2004, she continued to attend royal engagements on her own. In April 2026, she attended an event at Buckingham Palace marking what would have been Elizabeth II's 100th birthday.
Harry and Meghan remain private citizens
Prince Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals in January 2020 and said they would not resume official royal roles. They left the UK in March 2020, living first in Canada and later in the United States before settling in Montecito, California.
They have raised Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in the United States while producing Netflix programmes and podcasts. Meghan also runs the As Ever brand. In August 2026, the couple moved back to the London area and enrolled their children in British schools, but that move did not automatically change their royal status.
In September 2026, the Lord Chamberlain wrote to Harry and Meghan, the military and the government on Charles's behalf, making clear that living in the UK would not restore their status as working royals. The letter said they remained private citizens with commercial and charitable interests and could not use the style "His or Her Royal Highness" when supporting charities or other organisations.
Andrew gives up titles while investigation continues
Charles's brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor lost his military affiliations and royal patronages in 2022 after Elizabeth II removed them. Virginia Giuffre had accused Andrew of sexual assault in litigation. Andrew repeatedly denied the allegations and settled the case in 2022 without admitting wrongdoing.
In October 2025, amid continuing scrutiny of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, Andrew gave up his royal titles. Buckingham Palace said he would thereafter be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. In a statement, Andrew said the continuing allegations were distracting the king and the royal family from their work. He said he had therefore decided to stop using his titles and associated honours, while again denying the allegations.
In February 2026, Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in connection with his relationship with Epstein. Police released him after about 11 hours, but the investigation remains ongoing. Andrew has also denied involvement in Epstein's sex-trafficking offences.
For the monarchy, the immediate change is limited: the number of working royals remains 11, and Harry and Meghan's return to the UK has not expanded the official roster.
