Governance Proposal Targets Significant Reduction in Monthly Bad Debt Interest
Moonwell, a decentralized lending protocol, has introduced governance proposal MIP-X66 focused on revising market risk parameters, adjusting interest rate models, and utilizing protocol reserve assets to recapitalize its USDC market. Analysis by Anthias Labs suggests that if asset balances and utilization rates hold steady, the proposal could lower monthly bad debt interest costs from approximately $339,000 to $50,000—an 85% reduction that translates to nearly $289,000 saved each month.
Protocol Reserve Funds to Strengthen USDC Liquidity
The proposal outlines plans to convert Moonwell's reserve assets held on the Base chain and OP mainnet into USDC, injecting fresh liquidity into the market. Importantly, Moonwell clarifies this maneuver only involves protocol-owned assets, excluding any user deposits, and specifics on timing and amounts for reserve conversions remain unspecified.
Withdrawal Suspension Persists Amid Uncertainty
This governance initiative follows the late August MAMO market incident on the Base chain, driven by collateral valuation inflation and oracle price manipulation. The fallout resulted in approximately $9.1 million in unrecoverable loans, including about $2.35 million denominated in USDC. Since the incident, users have reported difficulties withdrawing USDC funds deposited after the event, with tens of thousands of dollars effectively locked due to liquidity restrictions.
User Dr_Bahmani, who deposited USDC through the MAMO market on September 2, noted the lack of communication regarding the incident and later discovered withdrawals were disabled. The user publicly requested greater transparency from Moonwell on metrics such as cash flow, outstanding debts, reserve status, and loan recovery progress, as well as clarity on future deposit and withdrawal policies. To date, Moonwell has not disclosed recovery figures or concrete plans to fully reimburse all creditors.
Lending Service Resumption Dependent on Further Risk Assessment
Moonwell emphasized that while the proposal might create conditions conducive to reinstating borrowing on the Base chain, reactivation of lending services will only proceed after thorough risk evaluations. Implementing these adjustments does not immediately signal a return to full borrowing functionality.
Current USDC Market Context
USDC remains one of the leading stablecoins globally, with a market capitalization near $74.3 billion and 24-hour trading volumes exceeding $10.1 billion. Price fluctuations have been minimal, maintaining overall stability despite the recent protocol disruption. Market participants are closely watching Moonwell's management of platform funds and progress toward restoring lending operations.
