Elon Musk has invested about $1 billion in Skydance as the company integrates Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery and begins a large-scale cost-cutting program. The investment also creates a new capital link between Musk and Skydance co-CEO David Ellison.
Musk Joins Skydance Equity Financing
People familiar with the matter said Musk’s investment is part of a broader equity financing effort being pursued by Skydance. Their identities were not disclosed because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Representatives for Musk and Skydance did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Skydance shares fell about 1% on October 22. Public information does not disclose the size of Musk’s stake, the company’s valuation or other terms of the transaction, leaving its precise effect on Skydance’s ownership structure unclear.
Skydance Integrates Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery
Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, with the combined company retaining the Skydance name. David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz serve as co-CEOs.
The integration covers Paramount and Warner Bros.’ two major film studios, the Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming services, as well as corporate functions supporting television networks and the companies’ two news divisions.
Skydance previously said it expects to achieve $6 billion in cost savings over three years. The company also carries nearly $80 billion in debt. For management, balancing the integration, spending reductions and continued investment in content and streaming will directly affect the combined business’s cash flow and capital needs.
A Continuing Capital Link With the Ellison Family
Musk’s investment extends a longstanding capital relationship between him and the Ellison family. Larry Ellison, Oracle’s co-founder and David Ellison’s father, invested $1 billion in Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, which was later renamed X, in 2022.
Larry Ellison also invested in Tesla in 2018 and served on the company’s board. During Skydance’s bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, he personally guaranteed more than $40 billion in equity financing.
For Skydance, Musk’s funding arrives as the company moves into the post-deal integration phase. It must manage substantial debt, organizational changes following the acquisition and its cost-saving targets at the same time. The final terms of Musk’s investment and how the funds will be used have not been disclosed.
