The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced on Tuesday that delegates to the Democratic National Convention will hold a virtual vote from August 1 to 5 to officially elect the current Vice President, Kamala Harris, as the party's presidential candidate for the November 5 presidential election. This voting process is meant to ensure that Harris can represent the Democratic Party in the presidential race.
According to a statement released by DNC leaders, Harris is the only eligible candidate in the party's presidential nomination petition process. This means that although the primary process usually features multiple candidates, Harris is the sole candidate in this nomination, thus smoothly becoming the only contender.
The virtual vote will be conducted through an online platform, with all Democratic National Convention delegates participating remotely. This move not only ensures the transparency and fairness of the election process but also adapts to current pandemic control needs, ensuring the safety and health of the delegates.
The DNC also stated that they are committed to finalizing and announcing the list of presidential candidates by August 7. This timeline is much earlier than the scheduled convention dates, providing the party and the electorate more time to familiarize themselves with and support the candidates. The national convention will be held in Chicago from August 19 to 22, which will include more party-related and public activities to further build momentum for the presidential election.
