Expanding Job Applications Beyond Social Services
Initially, McClain targeted positions like deputy director, project manager, and case manager within social services, actively applying on platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed. She participated in relevant training sessions and meticulously prepared for interviews. Over time, facing limited responses, she broadened her search to lower-threshold jobs, including retail, reflecting her determination to secure employment.
Challenges of Online Networking and Self-Doubt
Despite multiple applications and tailoring her résumé, responses remained scarce. The accumulation of rejections triggered doubts about potential barriers related to her age, race, or educational background. At one point, McClain suspected possible blacklisting. After about a year, overwhelmed by frustration and exhaustion, she withdrew from LinkedIn and paused her job hunt.
Financial Strain and Changes in Living Arrangements
Extended unemployment led to financial hardship, forcing McClain to seek government assistance. She alternated between staying with friends in California and family in Las Vegas before eventually moving back home. To reduce expenses, she gave up a long-term storage unit, forfeiting some personal belongings.

Securing a Remote Customer Service Role
Earlier this year, McClain renewed her job search efforts. Though repeatedly rejected for medical billing positions, she ultimately secured a full-time remote customer service role through a referral from her daughter.
