Oil above $100 a barrel, rising geopolitical tensions, shifting Federal Reserve expectations and questions about artificial intelligence spending are pulling U.S. stocks in different directions. Peter Tuchman, a veteran floor trader at the New York Stock Exchange, says it is difficult to tell which factor will next set the market’s direction. The S&P 500 fell 1.8% last Friday, while CME FedWatch data showed the market pricing in a 72% chance of a Fed rate hike in December. A hike would raise borrowing costs for listed companies.
Oil, conflicts and rate expectations converge
Tuchman pointed to oil prices, interest rates, the U.S.-Iran standoff and the Russia-Ukraine war as forces shaping trading. He said the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has intensified again recently. Geopolitical developments and energy prices are prompting investors to assess potential effects on inflation and monetary policy, while higher rate expectations also threaten to increase corporate financing costs and weigh on equity valuations.
Rates are only part of the picture. Tuchman also cited tariffs, bond yields and broader bond-market performance as factors influencing trading decisions. Investors are weighing how these moving parts could affect company earnings and access to financing at the same time.
AI trade splits as funds weigh profit-taking
Artificial intelligence investments are also diverging. Tuchman said the trade has separated into distinct segments, including large cloud-computing companies and data-center builders. Questions about AI spending could lead to different performance across companies and sectors, though he cited no specific businesses or spending figures.
Hedge funds could provide another source of market activity. Tuchman said many have returned 10% to 15% so far this year, and some may close positions in November to lock in gains. If that happens, portfolio adjustments could add to short-term volatility.
Despite the competing pressures, the S&P 500 was still less than 2% below its record high when Tuchman recorded his video. The index’s proximity to a peak alongside Friday’s decline highlights how investors are reassessing macroeconomic and geopolitical risks, the AI investment trade and positioning. The available information does not indicate which factor will take the lead next.
