Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) shares climbed ahead of the company's fiscal fourth-quarter results next week, moving above a short-term level watched by traders. The stock rose as much as 3.6% in afternoon trading on Sept. 22 to $1,081.78. At 12:05 p.m. Eastern time, it was up $33.67, or 3.23%, at $1,077.63.
The move placed Micron on IBD's Daily Stock Picks list. The market's focus extends beyond the day's gain: investors are assessing whether the upcoming report can support expectations for continued growth in memory-chip demand and artificial-intelligence infrastructure spending. With earnings due next week, the results and management's comments on demand, pricing and capital spending could drive near-term volatility.
Shares Move Above the $1,042.40 Short-Term High
From a technical perspective, Micron has moved above the $1,042.40 short-term high formed on Sept. 9. The level is viewed as an early entry signal, indicating that the stock has shown momentum before breaking out of its longer consolidation pattern. It is not, however, the same as the formal buy point identified by the technical setup.
Micron's current cup pattern has a formal buy point at $1,255, roughly 10 cents above the pattern's left-side peak. Based on the intraday price on Sept. 22, the stock remains well below that level. A cup pattern generally develops over at least six weeks and can extend for nearly a year. Micron's current formation is identified as a cup without a handle.
The stock's relative strength line has also improved, reaching its highest level in nearly three months. The line compares a stock's performance with that of the broader market. Its rise indicates that Micron has recently outperformed the market benchmark, but the measure does not by itself show that the company's earnings or valuation has changed.
Micron Ranks Near the Top of Its Industry Group
Data displayed on Sept. 22 gave Micron an IBD Composite Rating of 95 out of 99, reflecting its combined position across earnings, price performance and other technical measures. The company ranked fourth among 197 industry groups, placing it near the top of the group.
These ratings do not determine the earnings outcome and cannot replace an assessment of the company's fundamentals. Investors are still waiting for Micron's latest quarterly revenue, profit and guidance for the following quarter, including any change in demand for high-bandwidth memory and other products tied to AI servers. The page also noted that the market data and ratings were not real time and were captured at 12:05 p.m. Eastern time on Sept. 22, 2026.
Earnings Report Puts Demand Durability in Focus
Micron is one of the world's major memory-chip manufacturers. Its results are typically influenced by DRAM and NAND pricing, data-center investment, demand for personal computers and smartphones, and the inventory cycle. Recent spending on AI infrastructure has increased attention on high-performance memory products and made investors more focused on Micron's data-center orders and product mix.
At the same time, the market continues to assess whether AI-related capital spending can remain durable and whether expected chip demand is already reflected in the share price. Micron's pre-earnings advance suggests that traders are reassessing the company's earnings prospects and the memory-chip cycle. Actual profit, gross margin, product pricing and management guidance, however, remain undisclosed until the report.
After clearing the Sept. 9 short-term high, Micron's ability to move closer to the formal $1,255 buy point will depend on subsequent trading activity and the earnings information. The facts currently available are the move above $1,042.40, the relative strength line's highest level in nearly three months and the scheduled release of fiscal fourth-quarter results next week. Longer-term direction will require confirmation from new financial data.
