New Study Reveals Broad Yet Shallow AI Integration Across US Jobs
A recent collaborative research effort by Vanderbilt University, Harvard University, and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis highlights that artificial intelligence (AI) is present across a broad range of occupations in the United States, but its use remains largely superficial. Approximately one-fifth of surveyed professions report at least 20% of employees incorporating AI tools into their daily tasks. However, only about 16% of jobs show that 70% or more of workers frequently rely on AI.
Vanderbilt economist Adam Blandin, part of the study team, notes that while AI adoption is growing, the market is far from saturation. "AI's footprint resembles a vast but shallow lake, with many workers still operating in areas where AI's impact is minimal," he explains.
Laundry Workers and Construction Equipment Operators Surpass AI Usage Expectations
Contrary to common assumptions about manual labor roles, the study reveals surprisingly high AI engagement among laundry and dry-cleaning personnel and construction equipment operators. Over 60% of construction equipment operators reported using AI on the job, significantly exceeding the model's projected 19.5%. Similarly, almost 49% of laundry workers utilize AI, more than double the anticipated 20.6%.
High AI use was also observed among computer and office equipment repair technicians and industrial electrical and electronic repair workers, with reported rates exceeding 70%, well above predictions.
Blandin suggests this stems from AI's strength in supporting information retrieval and technical guidance, even within primarily hands-on roles. For instance, construction operators might leverage AI for quick access to safety guidelines or machinery assembly instructions, while laundry staff could use AI systems to optimize workflow and decision-making.
Lower-than-Expected AI Adoption in Administrative and Support Positions
In contrast, traditional office roles such as administrative assistants, data entry clerks, and receptionists display considerably lower AI usage rates than projected. Only 7.6% of receptionists reported employing AI, starkly under the expected 46%-54% range. Similarly, medical secretaries and administrative assistants show AI adoption around 17%, indicating slower integration.
The study attributes this lag primarily to regulatory and legal challenges, particularly stringent privacy and data security rules in healthcare-related fields. Additionally, the complex expertise required in these roles often limits AI's ability to replace human judgment and accumulated experience.
Regulatory and Market Factors Shape AI Usage Pace
The research underscores ongoing market apprehension about AI-driven job displacement. Notably, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned about AI causing significant labor market disruptions and the emergence of "roles reserved exclusively for humans." Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisions AI fostering new job categories, even if corporate workforce sizes shrink.
Experts emphasize that despite rapid technological advances, widespread, deep AI integration into specific tasks remains uneven. Regulatory environments and practical workplace needs play critical roles in determining how quickly and extensively AI is adopted.
Overall, AI's role in the US labor market exhibits a patchwork of selective adoption and varied depth. Surprising frontrunners such as laundry and construction staffs highlight niche AI applications, while fields constrained by legal and expertise considerations lag behind. The trajectory of AI in the workplace will depend heavily on technological maturity, industry characteristics, and evolving regulatory frameworks.
