Air Freight Rates Surge Up to 70% Amid Middle East Conflict

Summary:Rising jet fuel costs and restricted airspace drive sharp increases in global air cargo prices.

The Middle East conflict is having a noticeable impact on global logistics chains.

Due to disruptions in some maritime routes and the closure of Middle Eastern airspace, shippers are redirecting some cargo from sea to air, causing freight rates to rise rapidly.

According to the Freightos Air Index data, spot air freight rates from South Asia to Europe have increased by 70% to $4.37 per kilogram, and rates from South Asia to North America have risen by 58% to $6.41 per kilogram.

Logistics company Kuehne+Nagel stated that the current industry focus is on ensuring the transport of urgent goods such as food and medicine.

Analysts point out that aviation fuel prices have doubled since the outbreak of the conflict, and flight rerouting around the conflict area has also reduced capacity, further driving up transportation costs.
