Summary:Micron will build a new fab at its newly acquired Taiwan site to expand advanced DRAM capacity for AI demand.

Global semiconductor manufacturers are accelerating investment in advanced storage capacity to address the demand surge brought by the artificial intelligence wave.

American storage chip giant Micron Technology announced it will build a second chip factory at its newly acquired production site in Taiwan.

Expanding HBM Supply

The company stated that the new plant will primarily be used to expand advanced DRAM product capacity, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM). HBM is widely used in AI training servers and high-performance computing platforms.

Reinforcing Taiwan Production Capacity

Micron has completed the acquisition of the Tongluo P5 plant from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. The scale of the new factory is expected to be similar to the existing production base in Miaoli.

The new project is expected to commence at the end of the fiscal year 2026, showcasing the company's continued investment in advanced manufacturing bases in Asia.

AI Driving Storage Cycle

Analysts point out that with the growth of generative artificial intelligence and data center investments, the demand for high-end storage chips has risen significantly, pushing the industry into a new cycle of capital expenditure.
