Differing Recovery Strategies from Binance Alpha and Kraken on NES Trading
On September 10, both Binance Alpha and Kraken reactivated trading and withdrawal functions for the NES token after disruption caused by a smart contract security breach on August 24. Each exchange implemented distinct approaches to resume services. Binance Alpha applied a dual snapshot system to segregate token holders and determine redemption eligibility, while Kraken restricted support exclusively to NES tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, leaving BNB Chain deposits inactive.
Binance Alpha Uses Snapshots to Define Token Holder Eligibility
Binance Alpha announced that users holding NES tokens before 14:51 UTC on August 24 and still holding them at the trading suspension time of 04:00 UTC on September 5 qualify for a 1:1 token redemption. NES tokens acquired after August 24 are excluded from this exchange and will be processed via refunds. The exchange committed to issuing refund notifications within seven business days to eligible users, though the precise calculation method for refunds remains undisclosed. NES trading officially resumed at 08:00 UTC on September 10.
Kraken Supports Only Ethereum-Based NES Migration; BNB Chain Not Yet Restored
Kraken communicated that impacted NES tokens would be migrated to a new smart contract on the Ethereum network, with deposit and withdrawal services resuming as of 14:00 UTC on September 10. However, NES deposits on the BNB Chain remain suspended, with no migration path available through Kraken at present. Kraken emphasized that users must verify transactions on the Ethereum blockchain and confirm new contract details carefully to avoid loss of funds.
Uncertainty Persists for NES Holders Using Private Wallets
The restoration efforts apply exclusively to tokens held within the respective exchanges and do not encompass NES tokens in private wallets controlled by users’ own keys. Neither the NES official website nor wallet provider guides currently offer a transparent migration solution for private wallet holders affected by the incident. NES holders are advised to refrain from interacting with related smart contracts or moving tokens until clear instructions are released, as premature actions could result in asset loss.
The smart contract breach and subsequent exchange responses have raised significant concerns regarding liquidity and user fund security within the NES ecosystem. Investors and token holders should carefully monitor announcements from Binance Alpha, Kraken, and NES’s official channels for updates on recovery protocols and guidance.
