Lisk’s LSK Token Sees Dramatic Price Fluctuations
On Sunday, Lisk’s native cryptocurrency LSK experienced intensive volatility, briefly surging above $2—a remarkable increase of over 900% from early August lows. However, within hours, the price retreated to around $0.80, settling with a daily gain of more than 300%. This volatility triggered a liquidation cascade exceeding $41 million, marking the largest single-day forced liquidation event in the crypto market that day.
Short Squeezes Fuel Price Rally
Market data from Coinglass reveals that of the $41.13 million liquidated, short positions accounted for $33.7 million versus only $7.44 million for long positions. The 4:1 ratio of short liquidations suggests the price surge was primarily driven by short sellers covering their positions rather than fresh buying interest. As shorts rushed to buy to avoid further losses, LSK’s price was pushed even higher.
On Sunday, Lisk futures open interest totaled about $42 million, and the day’s trading volume reached $501 million. Meanwhile, the spot market showed relatively thin order books. At the time of reporting, LSK steadied near $0.81, maintaining a substantial gain from the day's opening levels.
Market Focus Shifts to Lisk’s Transformation Plans
The recent price swings are linked to Lisk’s announcement of plans to shut down its existing blockchain by October 31 as it pivots to offering stablecoin payment solutions targeting corporate finance teams. As part of this strategic shift, Lisk proposed burning 100 million LSK tokens, representing a 25% reduction in circulating supply. This token burn proposal remains subject to approval through a token holder vote.
Currently, LSK tokens exist as loyalty points on Ethereum and Base chains, with users on the old chain required to complete asset transfers before the deadline. The Lisk team advises users that withdrawals may take up to eight days, plus an additional three days to unlock and unstake tokens. Importantly, staking users can unlock their assets without penalty during this period.
Upcoming Token Holder Vote to Set Lisk’s Direction
Although LSK’s value has declined over 97% from its 2018 peak, the recent price volatility underscores some market anticipation toward the company’s repositioning efforts. Over the next three weeks, the token holders’ vote will determine whether the burn proposal passes, influencing Lisk’s future token supply and market trajectory. Investors and industry watchers will keenly monitor the effects of the blockchain shutdown and the launch of Lisk’s new enterprise payment service.
