The UK Reform Party has secured two substantial political donations within a 24-hour period from cryptocurrency investors Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo, co-founder of BitMEX. Each contributed £36 million, totaling £72 million (around $97 million), marking a historic high for a single political donation in the UK. This infusion significantly strengthens the crypto sector's financial backing of the Reform Party.
Donors’ Background and Stated Intentions
Christopher Harborne, an investor in Tether and Bitfinex, announced his £36 million donation a day after Ben Delo’s contribution. Harborne emphasized that his donation carries no expectation of titles, policy favors, or personal gain; rather, he expressed a desire only for the Reform Party to be well-prepared for governance. Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform Party, remarked that this funding will boost the party’s competitiveness ahead of the next general election.
Strengthening Ties Between Reform Party and Crypto Industry
Harborne’s latest £36 million donation triples his previous contribution of £12 million in December 2022, previously regarded as the largest single donation from a living UK donor to a political party. In the first quarter of 2026, Harborne and Delo added subsequent donations of approximately £3 million and £4 million respectively, which accounted for about 76% of the Reform Party's total donations during that period. This highlights the growing influence of crypto billionaires in the party’s fundraising efforts.
Regulatory Questions Surrounding Crypto Political Donations
It remains unclear whether these latest contributions were made using cryptocurrency or traditional currency. Earlier donations by Harborne, including £9 million, were confirmed to be in cash. The UK's Electoral Commission stated in March that no political party has yet declared political donations definitively categorized as crypto assets. Meanwhile, the London Metropolitan Police are investigating allegations related to the Reform Party’s political donations. Nigel Farage is also under parliamentary investigation concerning a £5 million personal gift received from Harborne ahead of his 2024 parliamentary candidacy. Both Farage and the Reform Party deny any wrongdoing.

The UK government has proposed banning political donations made in cryptocurrencies and setting a £100,000 annual cap on donations from overseas voters.
