Bitcoin Fails to Surpass Key Resistance at $80,000
Bitcoin remained under pressure on Wednesday, failing to reclaim the critical $80,000 level and edging down about 0.4% from the previous day. The renewed geopolitical tensions, particularly the US strikes against Iranian tankers driving oil prices higher, have heightened risk aversion and weighed on crypto assets.
Oil Prices Reach Three-Month Peaks Amid Middle East Tensions
Brent crude surged past $101 per barrel for the first time since late July, while US WTI crude firmed above $96 per barrel. The rise reflects growing concerns over stability in the Middle East after recent military actions. These elevated energy prices have contributed to subdued appetite for riskier assets including cryptocurrencies.
Yen Strengthens Toward Highest Level Since February
The Japanese yen rallied to around 153 against the US dollar, marking its strongest point since February and a 6.5% gain since August started. Despite significant short positions against the yen, fresh joint interventions from Japan and the US have intensified the currency’s appreciation, catching many traders off guard.
Large Yen Short Positions Face Increased Pressure
Data from Bloomberg indicates yen short interest remains near record highs exceeding ¥5 trillion as of early September. Charu Chanana, Chief Investment Strategist at Saxo Bank, highlighted the risk of rapid position unwinding given the yen’s recent appreciation, especially with the Bank of Japan yet to implement an official rate hike. Chanana noted, “The carry trade is undergoing adjustment, and sustained yen strength could quickly release leverage risks, potentially heightening market volatility.”
Central Banks and Treasury Intervene to Manage Currency Moves
The Bank of Japan is widely expected to announce a 0.25% rate hike at its September 28 meeting. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated continued intervention efforts to curb excessive yen depreciation. Bessent also mentioned having “asymmetric information” regarding Japan’s policies and asserted the US Treasury’s role as a market leader. His comments have drawn market attention, underscoring the risks for traders holding yen positions.
The combination of escalating US-Iran tensions pushing energy prices upward and coordinated US-Japan forex interventions has created a complex backdrop for markets. Bitcoin’s temporary setback below $80,000 and the rising yen volatility highlight increased uncertainty around market liquidity. Investors and traders remain focused on developments in geopolitical events, central-bank policies, and currency interventions in the near term.
