Kalshi Proposes WTI Perpetual Contract with No Expiry
Kalshi, a regulated U.S. exchange, is preparing to submit an application to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for the launch of a perpetual futures contract based on West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil. This follows its approval earlier in May to offer a Bitcoin perpetual contract. If authorized, Kalshi's WTI perpetual would be the first of its kind under U.S. regulatory oversight, marking a crossover of perpetual contract structures, common in crypto markets, into mainstream crude oil trading.
Trading Hours Limited to Weekdays
Unlike Kalshi's Bitcoin perpetual contract which trades 24 hours seven days a week, the proposed WTI perpetual contract would operate on a 24-hour basis Monday through Friday, with no weekend sessions. This design choice reflects a regulatory preference for limiting oil market trading hours to traditional business days, addressing concerns around continuous risk and market continuity. While standard WTI futures already pause trading on weekends, their daily sessions cover nearly the entire day, allowing for substantial price discovery even outside normal hours.
Eliminating contract expiry means traders would no longer need to roll positions to the next month, simplifying the trading process. However, Kalshi’s decision to forgo weekend trading may limit price discovery during those periods, a feature speculated to affect certain market participants who rely on weekend price signals. Previously, the CFTC halted CME's attempt to self-certify a small-scale 24/7 WTI product, underscoring regulatory caution over extending crude oil trading times.

Kalshi's Bitcoin perpetual contract uses a continuously available, globally aggregated spot-price index to anchor pricing, ensuring a stable and transparent mechanism. In contrast, the oil market is tied to physical delivery and storage with spot prices that are fragmented across locations and time windows, lacking a unified, real-time index comparable to crypto spot prices.
The CFTC has requested industry input on how perpetual contracts in commodities like oil might appropriately reference physical market data or futures curves to avoid price distortions or manipulation. WTI futures prices embed forward-looking information—such as storage costs and supply-demand projections—making the choice of reference price critical.
Kalshi’s contract would likely use the near-month WTI futures as its pricing base, applying a funding rate mechanism to reflect carry costs and roll adjustments. The 2020 episode of negative WTI prices highlights the potential complexity and risk in calibrating these parameters effectively.
Users and Regulatory Scrutiny
For commercial users such as producers, refiners, and large consumers, a perpetual crude contract could simplify hedging by removing the need to manage position rollovers across contract months. Nonetheless, the CFTC emphasized that such contracts must convincingly address specific commercial needs rather than primarily serve as speculative instruments; hence, regulatory approval thresholds for oil contracts remain stringent compared to digital assets.
Data from crypto exchanges show that perpetual contracts can capture weekend price variations, contributing to continuous market information flow. Kalshi’s 24/5 trading hours, however, do not maintain weekend pricing, prioritizing regulatory alignment and position continuity over uninterrupted price discovery.
