Lightning Acquisition: Meta's Third Largest Deal with Manus
Tech giant Meta officially announced this Monday that it has completed a significant acquisition of start-up Butterfly Effect (Manus), which focuses on General Purpose AI Agent. Although the exact financial terms have not been fully disclosed, multiple sources and angel investors confirmed that the deal involves billions of dollars, making it Meta's third-largest acquisition after WhatsApp and Scale AI. The negotiations progressed rapidly, with the entire process from initial contact to final agreement taking just over ten days, leaving the founding team "incredibly amazed."
Founded by a Chinese team and headquartered in Singapore, Manus is an emerging AI company whose Manus model has gained fame in Silicon Valley for its powerful deep research, complex programming, and automated task execution capabilities. This March, Manus showcased its ability to generate detailed research reports and build customized websites with one click, following DeepSeek and again stunning global AI benchmarks. Before joining Meta, the company was undergoing a new funding round with a valuation of $2 billion. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his core executive team are said to be loyal users of Manus, which directly facilitated this strategic acquisition.
Commercial Transformation: Meta Shifts from Open Source to Paid Subscription
This acquisition marks a significant shift in Meta’s AI strategy. For a long time, Meta has been pursuing an "open source" approach, building an ecosystem by freely distributing its Llama series models. However, the inclusion of Manus brings Meta millions of highly engaged paid subscribers. Data shows that Manus, after just eight months online, has an annual recurring revenue (ARR) exceeding $100 million, having processed more than 147 trillion tokens. Meta has clearly stated its plans to keep Manus operating independently while continuing to sell its professional services and integrating its deep task processing capabilities into Instagram, WhatsApp, and its advertising systems.
Beyond product integration, Meta values the premium on talent. Manus CEO Shaw Hong will become a Meta Vice President, continuing to lead the team in product iterations. This is another core move in Zuckerberg's formation of an "AI Dream Team," following Meta's stake in Scale AI earlier this year, bringing Alexandr Wang onboard as Chief AI Officer. Analysts point out that in the face of challenges from OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, Meta is making strategic acquisitions to directly engage with cutting-edge AI application layers, ensuring a leading position in the productivity tools and enterprise AI services market.
Global Vision: The "Great Navigation" Era for Young Chinese Entrepreneurs
The success of Manus is seen as a reflection of the rise of a new generation of Chinese AI entrepreneurs on the global stage. Liu Yuan, a partner at ZhenFund, highlighted that this serves as a tremendous inspiration for young Chinese entrepreneurs, marking their ability to gain recognition from top giants through exceptional engineering and product instincts, even in the highly competitive domains of computing power and algorithms. In a very short time, Manus created over 80 million virtual machines, a level of efficiency that Meta currently sees as a critical technological asset.
Post-acquisition, Manus promises to operate on a stronger, more sustainable resource base without altering its original decision-making mechanisms. For Meta, this is not just a technological augmentation but also an expansion of its business model. By combining Manus's advanced research tools with Meta's extensive social media traffic pool, Meta aims to carve out a stable AI software service subscription revenue line, maintaining profit flexibility in the fierce tech arms race.
