Meeting between Zelensky and Callas: Discussing Energy Support and Sanctions
On the 13th, Ukrainian President Zelensky met with the visiting EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Callas, in Kyiv. The discussions focused on several topics, with a particular emphasis on energy support for Ukraine during winter, the EU's upcoming new round of sanctions against Russia, and how to utilize Russia's frozen overseas assets.
Discussing Ukraine's Energy Security
According to the Ukrainian President's website, Zelensky and Callas discussed the damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure caused by Russian attacks. Both agreed on the need to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine's energy systems to ensure secure energy supply during winter. Callas noted that EU experts are assessing the restoration needs of Ukraine's energy systems and plan to provide the necessary assistance.
Usage of Russia's Frozen Assets
Another key topic of the meeting was how to use Russia's frozen overseas assets, particularly in Ukraine's defense and reconstruction sectors. Zelensky emphasized that the EU will intensify sanctions against Russia and that the frozen Russian assets should be used to support Ukraine's defense capabilities and infrastructure rebuilding. Callas stated that the EU is taking a proactive stance on this issue and is working to implement related measures.
New Round of Sanctions Against Russia
The EU's new round of sanctions against Russia was also a focal point of the talks. Callas confirmed that the EU will continue to weaken the economic foundations of Russia through economic sanctions, especially in key sectors like energy and finance. Meanwhile, the EU is also closely monitoring Ukraine's energy recovery efforts and plans to provide more support to ensure stable energy supply during winter.
Ukraine's EU Membership Process
Another important subject was Ukraine's process of joining the EU. Zelensky stated after the meeting that Ukraine is ready to complete all technical preparations for EU accession chapters by the end of November and will continue to strive to advance this process. Callas expressed that the EU will continue to support Ukraine's reforms and development in all aspects to ensure a smooth integration into the EU.
